Institute for Education Leadership Award
Mayor Anthony A. Williams, 2006
The Institute for Education is delighted to honor Mayor Anthony A. Williams with its 2006 leadership award. Throughout his tenure, Mayor Williams has been a consistent supporter of IFE’s work and–more importantly–a champion of causes that have improved the lives of our citizens and the economic vitality of our city. His efforts have spanned the spectrum–from bringing Major League Baseball, the Washington Nationals, to the District, to the development of Anacostia, to expanding health care for all residents to bringing worldwide respect to our Capital City.
Through his leadership, Mayor Williams has sparked a renaissance in Washington, DC.
His administration has consistently produced balanced budgets, while generating economic investment and improving the quality of life of our citizens. One of the cornerstones of Mayor Williams’ tenure has been creating a people-friendly government that listens to citizens through town hall meetings and citizen summits.
All this has established a solid foundation for our city’s future development. It is a historic legacy of which he should be proud. And we are proud that he is such a good friend. He has supported IFE and its projects with a generous commitment of his personal time, ideas, and enthusiasm. He reached across borders by convening a quarterly summit with leaders in Maryland and Virginia to address common issues confronting our region–a project originated by IFE. And he has appeared 8 times as a speaker at IFE’s Info Breakfasts. Mayor Williams was a keynote speaker at the founding Center for International Education symposium and was celebrated for his bipartisan corporation in governing with Congressman Tom Davis, R-Virginia at the IFE Civility: The politics of common ground forum.
It is IFE’s privilege to present its 2006 Leadership award to Mayor Anthony A. Williams for his work and dedication on so many important levels. We look forward to the Mayor’s continuing leadership as he enters private life.
