Celebrating Stavros!

As the tenure of our dearest IFE Diplomatic Steward of AI, His Excellency Stavros Lambirnidis, Ambassador of the European Union to the United States, draws to a close, the Institute for Education was honored to bring together luminaries from the worlds of law, policy, diplomacy, technology, and business to fete his remarkable leadership over the years.

In the always elegant setting of the European Residence in Kalorama, under countless works of American contemporary art, over 50 participants in the IFE Future of AI dinner series assembled in a “reunion” of sorts. There, everyone had the chance to connect with leaders and experts, reflect on the immense progress of the technology and its governance in the years since the Future of AI Series began, and celebrate the impact of this milestone series.

The formal program began with inspirational remarks from recently retired Supreme Court Justice Steven Breyer, who raised a toast, highlighting Ambassador Lambrinidis’s significant contributions to the field of AI, marveling at a natural intelligence that brings out the best technological insights in his guests. He reflected on Lambrinidis’s evolving role, managing close US-EU partnership and cohesion within his bloc while contending with two wars—clearly no small task.

With equal enthusiasm, IFE Founder and CEO Coach Kemper welcomed the audience and expressed immense pride in celebrating “Stavros”—so notable, so iconic in Washington, he needs no last name! (Comparisons to Oprah, Madonna, and Taylor were made, to great laughter.) She proudly acknowledged his leadership and honored him as the IFE AI Diplomatic Steward with the prestigious Global Visionary Award.

IFE President and Future of AI Series Founder Dr. R. David Edelman rounded out the evening’s celebration by commending Stavros’ vision of seeing AI’s impact far earlier than most; his passion for ensuring the technology is adopted to reflect our principles and dynamism in bringing together such diverse and significant voices around his table for over the years—but also noting just what a loss for Washington his departure would be (playfully demanding that Brussels reconsider taking him from the Capital City).

Ambassador Lambrinidis was then presented with the IFE’s highest honor, its Global Visionary award, previously given to such luminaries as Justice Stephen Breyer and Dr. Joanna Breyer, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Secretary Lawrence Eagleburger, and Belgian Ambassador H.E. Jan Matthysen. With a heartfelt and highly entertaining poem—co-written with the help of AI, of course—he thanked the assembled group as friends, colleagues, and intellectual inspirations with warmest holiday wishes and promised more opportunities to connect next year in New York.
